Do I Need “Virus Protection”?
The short answer is “YES!”
It is the computer equivalent of an automobile seatbelt. The machine will still operate, but your [data's] safety is at serious risk. There is no excuse for unsafe computing when there are good, inexpensive and free options available. My favorite is called AVG Anti-Virus by a company called Grisoft. They have a range of reasonably-priced products, but their free (for personal, home use) anti-virus program provides the basic, minimum protection that everyone should have. What is Antivirus software?
Antivirus software is a computer program that detects, prevents, and takes action to disarm or remove malicious software programs, such as viruses and ‘worms’. You can help protect your computer against viruses by using antivirus software.
Computer viruses are software programs that are deliberately designed to interfere with computer operation. They can record, corrupt, or delete data, or spread themselves to other computers and throughout the Internet.
Because new viruses are developed daily, you must update your antivirus software regularly for full protection. You can set up most types of antivirus software to update automatically.
How do I tell if I already have antivirus software on my computer?
Check the Programs list on the Start menu and look for an antivirus program. Many major computer manufacturers include at least a trial version of a popular antivirus software package, such as McAfee or Symantec (Norton Anti-Virus). But just because the software is installed, doesn’t mean it’s “turned on,” or being updated regularly.
What if I already have antivirus software installed, but I want to install an antivirus program from a different company?
If you already have antivirus software installed, but you want to install a new product from a different company, be sure you uninstall the current product before installing the new one. Leaving the previous version installed can cause conflicts on your system.
I got a new software program, but when I go to install it, I get a message telling me to turn off my antivirus software. Is that safe?
Sometimes, when you install a new software program, you may need to turn off your antivirus software during installation. Be sure you turn your antivirus software back on again when you have finished installing the new product.
